Articles of the Week…

Every week I like to share a few articles about mental health and wellbeing that are a bit thought-provoking and I try to find the right balance between optimism and practical advice… which is a real challenge, I have to admit! With that said, here are some articles I found this week that I wanted to share with all of you:

Healthy Family Relationships Start With Communication — Here’s Why (Thrive Global, 11 November 2019) – Although this talks a lot about relationships with ageing parents, it provides very useful (and timely) advice for making your family relationships as healthy as possible. Since it’s coming up to the time of year when we tend to spend a lot of time with family, something which can trigger frustrations, resentments and arguments (and more), it’s a good reminder that healthy relationships take constant work. And funnily enough, an upcoming episode of Let’s Talk About Mental Health (week after next) is going to be all about getting through the holidays unscathed! Read the article here.

How Talking to Yourself Can Reframe Negative Thinking (Thrive Global, 4 December 2019) – I loved this interview with entrepreneur and fitness expert Ally Love for two reasons: (1) Her discussion about positive self-talk (timely given this week’s episode of Let’s Talk About Mental Health) and (2) Her idea about scheduling certain days to do certain things, something I’m working on at the moment to become more efficient as I juggle my writing with all the other things that need to be done when you’re running your own business. Men say it’s not masculine to talk about body image concerns (HealthTimes, 24 October 2019) – Sadly, the legacy of toxic masculinity lives on. Body image has a direct impact on mental health and wellbeing, and men need to be encouraged to speak openly about both topics. I’ll be talking about body image (regardless of gender) in an episode of Let’s Talk About Mental Health next year. In the meantime: read this article and talk about it, because the more we talk about it, the easier it gets! Read it here.

What to know about alcohol intoxication (Medical News Today, 3 December 2019) – Hopefully none of you need this, but it’s that time of year when the wine flows much more freely than it might otherwise so it’s good to know the difference between a standard drink and a bucket (clue: a bucket is not a standard drink…), plus what to do in event of severe alcohol poisoning. I know, I know, what a dry subject, but it needs to be covered! Read it here.

These Simple Habits Will Transform Your Well-being in 2020 (Thrive Global, 29 November 2019) – If you’re anything like me then you’re starting to think about the new year (not to mention the new decade) that is right around the corner. This easy-to-read article is full of quick things you can do that will have a major impact on your health and wellbeing, so get cracking and start the year (and the 20’s!) off right. Favourite Instagram Post of the Week…

I’ve decided to narrow down my weekly Instagram section in this newsletter to my one favourite post of the week… which I thought would make it easier, but it turned into a bit of a Sophie’s Choice because I had several contenders. Anyway, my absolute favourite this week is from the inspiring Nedra Tawwab (@nedratawwab), who I have posted here before and will most likely post again because her work is outstanding. This is a timely reminder for all of us:

  1. I love the message of this newsletter. You know I am a huge believer in self-talk. The positive and honest messages that I send myself really help me keep my mental health in check. Relationships with others are important in my life. It is true that relationships due take work.
