Might be time to learn the art of saying no (ABC News Australia, 3 January 2020): Why do some of us find it so hard to say ‘no’ to things, whether it’s at work, at home or in our social lives. This article offers some guidance to help build your comfort level with saying that little word that can be so difficult to say. Read it here.
Cities increase your risk of depression, anxiety and psychosis – but bring mental health benefits too (The Conversation, 18 December 2019): More than 4.2 billion people – over half of our planet’s entire population – now live in cities, a reality which can come with mental health risks. This article talks about the risks along with the opportunities associated with living in urban environments, things that are well worth thinking about so that you can make plans to care for your mental health and wellbeing regardless of where you live. My break-up was controlling my life until I took these steps (ABC Life, 16 January 2020): Although this article focuses on a relationship break-up, the advice is actually very handy for many different types of crisis that you might be going through. I think the most important message here is not to try to avoid your feelings or rush to get past them, because they are actually an important part of the healing process. Read it here.
These Middle-Age Success Stories Will Inspire You To Follow Your Dreams, Even If You Procrastinate (Source, Date): Tank Sinatra is a 39 year-old dad from Long Island, USA, who started making memes a few years ago and now has over 2 million followers. He’s used his platform to launch Tank’s Good News (Instagram: @tanksgoodnews) which does exactly what it says on the tin: sharing good news stories. It already has 1.3m followers on Instagram and I love the regular dose of positive news in a world seemingly full of negativity (at least it is if you only follow the mainstream media). This article is a round-up of later-in-life success stories as a response to one woman’s tweet last year calling for less of a focus on ’30-under-30′ and similar youth-obsessed lists, and it’s a great reminder that it is never, ever, too late to pursue your dreams or try something new. TED Talk of the Week…
Why you feel what you feel (Dr. Alan Watkins, TEDxOxford): This is an interesting talk by Dr. Watkins about the different developmental stages we go through from childhood to adulthood, including a piece around the crisis many of us face as we age, and how it all ties in to what we feel. Let me just say that his presentation style might not be for everyone, but on the whole the content is great; he talks about how understanding where you are emotionally is the key to then controlling it… sound familiar? I think I may have mentioned that concept once or twice in the podcast…! Running time: just over 20 minutes. Watch it here or in the player below.
(PS: You might have noticed I’ve changed this section from ‘YouTube video of the week’ to ‘TED Talk of the week’ – it appears I’ve become completely addicted to TED Talks over the past few weeks, so I decided to focus on them in this bit of the newsletter as they are excellent ways to learn about a complex topic in a short period of time)
