Thursday Thoughts: the weekly Let’s Talk About Mental Health newsletter (24 June, 2021)

Hello Talkers! (So I’ve decided to double-down on that one…)

I was going to open this by saying “another hectic week” and then I stopped myself. Why? Because I don’t want to fall into that trap of defining myself by how busy I have been, because it’s actually not something to be all that proud of – busy-ness can lead to feeling overwhelmed and dropping the ball on things; I only just realised today that last week’s newsletter was sent out dated the 10th of June when it was actually the 17th, so my attention to detail was definitely off.

So here is what I am choosing to focus on instead: it’s a beautiful rainy day here in southern New South Wales (Australia) and I’m quite fond of a good rain day (I’m also a massive fan of thunderstorms, having grown up in Sydney where they are frequent, but alas today seems to be just about the rain – quite a good downpour though, so zero complaints). Plus a few days ago it was the winter solstice which means we had our longest night/shortest day and now the days will grow ever-so-slightly longer every day, which brings joy to my heart. I talked last week about making a conscious effort to observe the cycles of nature more, and so this was definitely a big one in terms of the milestones of the year.

Anyway here’s a quick snapshot of my favourite things this week – hopefully at least one will make you smile/smirk/feel inspired. Have a fantastic week and a brilliant weekend!

Jeremy 😃

My favourite things this week:

1. Idea — Five-minute daily home reset

I’m doing a daily five-minute reset in my home, where I go around with a basket and collect anything that is out of place and then I put it back where it belongs (I’m terrible with leaving things out in the living room and my office). It only takes five minutes, so it’s super-quick and I really don’t have to think about it, and after a few days it makes the world of difference in terms of feeling more organised (which can lead to greater calm and peace of mind). Try it and let me know how it goes!

2. Social media — A note about self-sabotage… by @ted [via Instagram]

Here’s a thought: stop sabotaging yourself. “Don’t let you be the reason why you’re not advancing or becoming who you want to be” – quite possibly the best quote ever to remind you why you need to stop blocking yourself. What can you do today to get out of your own way?

3. Social media — The most important self-care tip you’ll ever read… by @thrive [via Instagram]

It is rare that I don’t say at least once in every episode of the Let’s Talk About Mental Health podcast “take things one step at a time” or “take things one day at a time”. Do you know why? Because anything else will potentially feel overwhelming. This ‘note to self’ from @thebehappyproject reminds you that when things feel overwhelming, remember [it’s about] one thought at a time, one task at a time, one day at a time. You can only do what you can do and you can only do things in this present moment.

Tip of the week for better mental health:

Be 100% the truest and most authentic version of you in everything you do and say. Who cares what other people think? If you do no harm, are kind and give more than you take then do what makes you happy and be the you-est version of you that you can be. Uniqueness rocks. Genuineness rocks. Honesty rocks.

Quote of the week:

“If you must look back, do so forgivingly. If you must look forward, do so prayerfully. However, the wisest thing you can do is be present in the present… gratefully.”

And over on www.jeremygodwin.com.au I published a blog post about why I decided to focus on growth in the most recent episode of Let’s Talk About Mental Health TV and why it’s such a core aspect of good mental health (and overall wellbeing). Click here to read (and if you like it then sign up to have future blog posts from jeremygodwin.com.au land in your inbox… thanks!).

Thanks for reading and enjoy your week/weekend! JG 🙂
