Hello Talkers and welcome to July!
I love July – quite possibly because it’s my birthday month (hello fellow Cancerians!) but also because it’s the mid-point of the year and, here in the Southern Hemisphere, it means we are officially deep into winter now. Funnily enough, after the last two weeks where I mentioned the whole observing-the-cycles-of-nature thing there was an article in the ABC (as in Australian Broadcasting Corporation for anyone overseas) talking about a growing trend of people finding greater connection with the rhythms of nature and the joy of using winter as a time to slow down and reflect (I will note that most of the people interviewed in the article were from Melbourne and having lived there for nearly 14 years I can say with absolute certainty that the only way to deal with winter there is to fully embrace it, because it is COLD!).
Anyway here’s a quick snapshot of my favourite things this week – hopefully at least one will make you smile/smirk/feel inspired. Have a fantastic week and a brilliant weekend!

This post perfectly illustrates the fact that we are usually kind and compassionate towards others, especially friends, when they make a mistake, yet when it comes to our own mistakes we are really tough on ourselves. Learn how to forgive yourself and let go (by the way, I discussed self forgiveness in Episode 80 and letting go in Episode 32 of the podcast).
2. Social media — No one is you. That is your superpower… by @calm [via Instagram]
This is something I’ve said in one form or another a few times before in the podcast… we often get so caught up in what everyone else is doing and completely lose sight of the fact that it is our uniqueness that defines us as human beings. Loved this post, especially for the ‘let that sink in’ caption.
3. Social media — Another important self-care tip… by @mentalhealthamerica [via Instagram]
Small steps are the greatest thing ever. If you try to go hard at things and change everything overnight you’ll often (usually) find it ends up not going so well… whereas by changing things just a little every day you will see results build and build. A 1% change over 100 days equals 100% (and it’s a lot more sustainable because we human beings don’t tend to be great with sudden, massive changes!).
Tip of the week for better mental health:
Listen to your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, it’s probably not. We often make things far more difficult for ourselves than they need to be just because we don’t listen to our intuition more (there’s a whole piece about the connection between our gut and our brain that I’ll talk about on my YouTube show in a couple of months, but suffice it to say that there is lots of evidence to suggest that gut instinct is a real thing).
