Thursday Thoughts: the weekly Let’s Talk About Mental Health newsletter (15 July, 2021)

Hello Talkers!

How is it Thursday already?! I admit this week has been like trying to get Jell-o to stick to a wall (very challenging, but thankfully nowhere near as messy). I was trying to think of something meaningful to write but do you know what? My brain is refusing to cooperate, so I consider that a sign to go with my feelings and simply share my post for the week…

The one thought I do have is to share that this week I’ve tried something a little different and I’ve covered ‘work’ as the topic of the week on the podcast and then expanded further on the how-to section in the latest episode of Let’s Talk About Mental Health TV. What do you think about this crossover? Let me know by leaving a comment!

So here’s a quick snapshot of my favourite things this week — hopefully at least one will make you smile/smirk/feel inspired. Have a fantastic week and a brilliant weekend!

P.S. I ran a quick poll on Instagram Stories the other day and asked if followers there would like me to start adding Let’s Talk About Mental Health TV to IGTV as well as YouTube; the results came in very fast with 100% of respondents saying yes so I’d say that’s a fairly overwhelming reason to make it happen! So starting this week, LTAMH:TV is now available on both YouTube and IGTV beginning with this week’s episode (see below). Enjoy!

P.P.S. Are you an Amazon Music user? Let’s Talk About Mental Health is now on Amazon Music! Follow the podcast here: (note: this link is for the Australian store, if it doesn’t work for you then search for Let’s Talk About Mental Health on your local Amazon Music).

My favourite things this week:

1. Music — Goodbye by LP [via YouTube]

I only just discovered LP a few weeks ago (where have I been?!) and I am currently obsessed. A multi-talented singer/songwriter/musician who can craft a catchy hook like nobody’s business – and I’m sure you know my thoughts on how uplifting music can be for your mental health. A proud member of the LGBTQIA+ community, LP’s entire back catalogue is pure gold and I’m especially in love with a few songs, including Goodbye which is the most recent release from LP’s forthcoming LP (lol!… ask your parents about LPs if you’re under 35). Warning: Coarse language

2. Social media — The perfect summary of the dilemma facing many of us as/when things re-open… by @newyorkercartoons [via Instagram]

I don’t know about you, but my bedtime is 8:30pm and my wake time is a few minutes before 5am and woe betide anybody who gets between me and my sleep routine. My phone goes on full silent mode with all calls blocked, and I have turned down invitations to things because they will get in the way of my regular sleep routine. Seriously. Anyway we’re dealing with lots more lockdowns here in Australia so I guess this won’t be a concern for a while (not making light of what is a tough situation), but wanted to share because this made me laugh…

3. Social media — Great advice for the first 60 seconds of your day… by @ariannahuff [via Instagram]

The simplest and most profound advice ever.

Tip of the week for better mental health:

Say no. Do it with kindness, but say no when you mean no or when you don’t have the capacity.

Quote of the week:

There is nothing in the world, I venture to say, that would so effectively help one to survive even the worst conditions, as the knowledge that there is a meaning in one’s life.

Viktor Frankl
