Thursday Thoughts: the weekly Let’s Talk About Mental Health newsletter (12 August, 2021)

Hello Talkers!

Full disclosure: exhaustion has crept into my work over the past couple of weeks. Not with the work itself (because I love what I do) but I’ve been so tired, due to winter dragging on and on, that I’ve noticed myself making more and more little mistakes because I don’t have the full mental capacity I usually have every day. I’m talking about little things like sending out the last couple of newsletters with errors in the dates and things like that; honestly, I don’t think anyone actually cares but I pride myself on attention to detail so when things like that happening, you know my focus is slipping.

The main reason I’ve been feeling exhausted is from not sleeping properly because our winter this year has been miserable — mainly wet and windy for months on end — and that’s something we’re not that used to out here. Sure, our winters in the countryside are cold (very cold) but they’re usually accompanied by blue skies 75%+ of the time… not this winter! No offence to anyone in Melbourne, Australia (and I say this with love because it was a wonderful place to live for nearly 14 years) but this has been like a Melbourne winter in terms of being damp, dark and dreary (which could also describe a Melbourne spring or autumn…!!!). No need to go on about why that’s impacted on my sleep (I could bore you for ages about the issues with being too hot vs too cold at night), but suffice it to say I am now in need of several decent nights of sleep!

But the great news is that there is light at the end of the tunnel — quite literally, because the days are rapidly growing longer! Since the winter solstice back on the 21st of June, the daylight today is now 43 minutes longer in just 6 weeks and that makes me very happy! Plus early-flowering bulbs and trees are beginning to bloom already so it’s a little taste of my soon-to-arrive favourite season, Spring. This is what I mean by learning to live more in tune with the seasons; when you do so, you become much more observant of the small and subtle shifts that happen every single day, and it makes for a great way to both ground yourself in the present and to summon your positive energy to make it through another day that could only be described as “bleurgh!” weather-wise.

So here’s a quick snapshot of my favourite things this week — hopefully at least one will make you smile/smirk/feel inspired. Have a fantastic week and a brilliant weekend!

1. Social media — A note about self respect… from @howmental [via Instagram]

I am acutely aware that I posted from @howmental last week (and in the exact same position), so this may now be a stan account for them as well! 🤣 What can I say, I have a limited number of accounts I like. This post is an excellent reminder for all of us: “Never beg anyone to be in your life. If you text, call, visit and still get ignored, walk away. It’s called self-respect.”

2. Social media — The sign of a true teacher or guide… from @the.holisitic.psychologist [via Instagram]

There are SO many people in the self help space who claim to have all the answers and yet, just like Jon Snow, know nothing. Now I’m not saying I get this right 100% of the time, but I work hard to ensure I’m offering guidance rather than be-all-and-end-all-solutions, because mental health and wellbeing is not a one-size-fits-all; I wish others with a public platform would recognise that fact. So this post spoke to me when I saw it: “True teachers or healers will guide you back to yourself, show you that you are the true expert, and will trust your own ability to find what truth is for you.” In other words: it’s about you, not the teacher. We’re just here to help you find the right path for you. Anyone who tries to tell you otherwise is a bit shonky and a whole lot wonky.

3. Social media — Stop glamourising overworking.. from @thehappinessprojectuk [via Instagram]

Am I the only one who has a bug up my butt about the constant glamorisation of overworking? If you give me a choice between working more or having a life that I enjoy… I AM GOING WITH THE LIFE! Please, please, please take a long hard look at how you are balancing your work with your non-work life and ensure that you are making time for rest, self care, healthy relationships and personal fulfilment activities like creating etc.

  1. Love the first weekly newsletter Jeremy. You are a realist and I appreciate that so much. There are people out there who to try to help, but I don’t actually think they’ve got the right skills. I like how honest you are. I also listened to the podcast let’s talk about self esteem and I like the fact you mention. It’s all good listening to podcasts or reading self help books or whatever else it might be, and you say to listeners you actually have to do the work and put the effort to make a change. I don’t think people realise this, I think they just think i will listen or read and then better. I have only recently dedicated some time each day or every other day to get in tune with myself and actually write things down, it helps because you see things for what they really are and then you see what trigger you to feel like that, and once you can work that out it certainly helps. Obviously, I can’t do it all my own and need the help of my therapist but I am starting to learn more about me and the things I want to improve on. Thanks again for the great content.
