Is it seriously the last few days of August already?! I (like many of you, I’m sure) am still trying to process that it’s 2021 so the fact that 8 months have gone by is… well, I don’t know what it is, but it’s something.
You might have seen the intro to this week’s Let’s Talk About Mental Health TV episode where I **jokingly** was having an existential crisis about what time/day it is (it’s embedded below if you haven’t seen it yet) and while I thought that was pretty amusing when I filmed it earlier this week, it seems it was prophetic because this morning I actually had to ask Siri what day it was. Oh dear.
That’s because lockdown continues here in New South Wales and throughout most of Australia and New Zealand (not sure about elsewhere so apologies if I’ve missed anywhere) and it feels very weird. Mind you, I’m completely aware that for much of 2020 we were blessed with low case numbers which meant a lot of freedom, however that (combined with a slow vaccination program) lulled us into a false sense of security and then boom! Delta. Great airline, not great pandemic part two. I felt inspired to make this week’s Let’s Talk About Mental Health TV video all about how to look after your mental health during lockdown, so I hope it serves to be helpful to anyone struggling at the moment no matter where you might be in the world.
I’ve taken a break from vlogging and blogging over on my Jeremy Godwin channel and not sure if/when I will go back to it. Not going to even try to put a positive spin on this: I’ve been working long hours to balance everything and my last vlog had six views. I love the work I do, but I am not putting in all of that extra time and effort for six views. I’m being completely transparent here about my feelings, which are a combination tired/annoyed/frustrated/disappointed, and while I love creating content there has to be a balance between time/effort vs. result vs. my working hours. For the last few weeks I’ve been working 6-6.5 days a week to balance content creation with client commitments, and so something has to give. For now I am pulling back to the bare basics of weekly content: staying focused on the Let’s Talk About Mental Health podcast and Let’s Talk About Mental Health TV plus this newsletter (at least for now). I’ve stopped doing Stories on YouTube (again, low views) and will just be sticking to the weekly episode every Wednesday, and at the moment the jury is still out on whether or not I continue with Reels on Instagram. If you’re enjoying my content and getting value from it, please let me know which formats work for you either here in the comments (end of the newsletter) or on Instagram. I want to ensure I’m devoting my time to content people actually want to watch/read/listen to rather than pumping out stuff that has minimal interest. And finally… it is only 45 days until I release the 100th episode of the Let’s Talk About Mental Health podcast and celebrate its two-year anniversary. I love this piece from Nick Bracks about reframing how we view failure; you can either see it as win/fail or view it as win/learn something regardless of outcome. I recently mentioned Nick’s book, Move Your Mind, on my Instagram and this is not sponsored (neither was that), I am just a big fan of the book and what Nick has done over many years to use his public platform to educate about mental health. Plus, he follows @ltamentalhealth on Instagram and has been very kind and supportive, so check out his stuff and say hi (tell him I sent you!).

This is a long quote and I just want to pull out two key bits for you to reflect on. First, “Stop worrying about other people understanding you… focus on what makes you happy, what makes your soul feel at peace.” And second, “Life becomes so much more fulfilling when you are just simply yourself.”
And one bonus thought-provoking thing I’d like to encourage you to think about. And I mean really think about… how can and will you take the lessons we have learned (and are still learning) in order to do and be better? I know, it’s deep and meaningful stuff but you come to Let’s Talk About Mental Health for direct, honest and thought-provoking content, don’t you? (I hope so or else I’m in trouble!)
Tip of the week for better mental health:
Talk to someone about a challenge you’re dealing with. Whether it’s a therapist or counsellor or a trusted family member or close friend, getting it out is the first step in resolving whatever it is. Remember what I say often about mental health: the more we talk about it, the easier it gets.
