Are you making time for yourself? (Thursday Thoughts: 28 March, 2024)

It’s time for another weekly round-up of tips for better mental health! Each week I share a handful of things I’ve come across that I find interesting, intriguing and inspirational, plus I tell you about anything noteworthy that’s coming up on my weekly podcast, Let’s Talk About Mental Health, or just generally in terms of my work. So… let’s talk!

Hello Talkers! 👋🗣😃

Are you creating time just for yourself on a regular basis?

If not, why not?

Because the fact is that there will always be 1,001 things to do, and your to-do list will never be complete… so the only way to ensure you have the physical, mental and emotional energy you need to get through everything you need to get through is to make sure you have time for yourself, without bowing to the pressure put on us by ourselves and by society to fill every second of every day with activities. News flash: you can be a successful human being without hustling 24/7, and you’ll probably be a nicer one too because you’ll have more energy and be a lot less tightly wound!

I’ve had some great feedback from people after my recent decision to quit YouTube, and it’s interesting just how much the voices in our head can hold us back from putting ourselves first for fear of being judged by others.

Making time for yourself isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity. We all need to recharge our energy as well as our creativity, and so making time just for yourself to do whatever you want to helps you to unwind and relax, so that you can then get on with the business of life with renewed enthusiasm.

So here’s my tip of the week: Consciously make time for yourself in your schedule every single day. Start with half an hour, then see if you can work that up to an hour and stick with it. What you do is up to you — walking, running, reading, gardening, knitting, painting, hula-hooping, interpretive dance, doing origami while wakeboarding, the list of possibilities goes on — and aim to mix it up as much as possible so that you’re challenging yourself and keeping things interesting (since variety is the spice of life).

Until our next talk,

Jeremy 😃
