Small Acts of Kindness (Thursday Thoughts: 26 October, 2023)

It’s time for my weekly round-up of tips for better mental health! Each week I share a handful of things I’ve come across that I find interesting, intriguing and inspirational, plus I tell you about anything interesting that’s coming up on my weekly podcast, Let’s Talk About Mental Health, or just generally in terms of my work. So… let’s talk!

Hello Talkers! 👋🗣😃

Do you remember the last time someone held the door for you, or perhaps when a stranger gave you a warm, genuine smile? They’re such small acts… but they really stick with you, right?! Today, let’s dive into a topic we often overlook when discussing mental well-being: the therapeutic ripple effect of small acts of kindness, both given and received.

Being kind isn’t just about good karma and not being a d*ck; it’s also a mood booster. Whether you’re on the giving or receiving end, kindness releases a cocktail of feel-good hormones like oxytocin and serotonin. Plus, it takes the focus off our own troubles for a bit, helping us connect with the world in a gentle, compassionate way… precisely what the world needs a lot more of right about now.

And here’s the beauty of it: kindness doesn’t require grand gestures and it doesn’t have to cost anything. Sometimes, it’s the little things that pack the biggest emotional punch.

So, here’s a simple tip for you for the week: Commit to doing one small act of kindness each day for the next seven days. It could be as simple as sending an encouraging text to a friend or letting someone go ahead of you in the queue. Notice how these acts make you feel and whether they impact your general sense of well-being.

Remember, as the old saying goes, ‘In a world where you can be anything, be kind.’ But, also, let’s not forget that being kind to others often starts with being kind to ourselves.

Until our next talk, have a fantastic week!

Jeremy 😃

Last day for submission is Wednesday 1 November (end of day in your time zone). Episode will be released on December 31.
