Caught in the never-ending loop of social media? 😱 (Thursday Thoughts: 7 December, 2023)

It’s time for my weekly round-up of tips for better mental health! Each week I share a handful of things I’ve come across that I find interesting, intriguing and inspirational, plus I tell you about anything interesting that’s coming up on my weekly podcast, Let’s Talk About Mental Health, or just generally in terms of my work. So… let’s talk!

Hello Talkers! 👋🗣😃

Subject: Caught in the Social Media Spin Cycle?

Hello, wonderful listeners,

Ever find yourself opening your favourite social media app for a ‘quick check’ and, before you know it, an entire hour has passed? You’re not alone. In the vast, vibrant world of social media, time seems to operate in its own mysterious ways.

It’s like entering a supermarket for bread and leaving with everything but the thing you came for, thanks to all the flashy signs and distracting specials (not to mention the social media equivalent of that weird aisle in the middle of every Aldi store where anything goes, and you can find lawn mowers next to ballerina outfits).

We hop online for a specific reason, only to be swept up in a whirlwind of memes, cat videos, and the occasional existential crisis.

Navigating this digital dance can be tricky. While these platforms keep us connected, informed, and often entertained, they can also leave us feeling drained, distracted, and a little disoriented (and, all-too-often, misinformed).

The question is, how can we enjoy the feast of social media without overindulging?

So, here is one simple tip you can put into action this week: Set a ‘social media timer’. When you decide to dip into the digital realm, set a timer on your phone for a reasonable amount of time – say, 15 minutes. When the timer goes off, it’s your cue to step back into the real world. Consider it a game of ‘Beat the Clock’, social media edition. And, while you’re at it, resolve each time you scroll to unfollow accounts spreading false or misleading information, or who just don’t sit with

Remember, social media is a bit like dessert: delightful in small doses but it could potentially make you sick if you overdo it. Make a choice to enjoy it responsibly so that you can savour the sweetness without the side effects.

Until our next talk,

Jeremy 😃
