Who do you want to be? (Thursday Thoughts: 1 February, 2024)

It’s time for another weekly round-up of tips for better mental health! Each week I share a handful of things I’ve come across that I find interesting, intriguing and inspirational, plus I tell you about anything noteworthy that’s coming up on my weekly podcast, Let’s Talk About Mental Health, or just generally in terms of my work. So… let’s talk!

Hello Talkers! 👋🗣😃

It was either Shakespeare or the Spice Girls who so eloquently asked, “Who do you think you are?” — and it’s a question I think more of us could benefit from asking ourselves a lot more often.

You are not the same person you were a year ago, let alone 10 years ago, and yet all-too-often we cling onto situations and relationships far beyond their use-by date. Why? Comfort. Familiarity. Fear.

One of the biggest things I have done over the past few years, which has dramatically improved my issues with anxiety and depression, has been to regularly ask myself who I want to be… and then to use that to guide me forward. That’s meant making some tough choices, and big changes, along the way… but they’ve all been worth it. In the words of Lao Tzu:

“When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be.”

Lao Tzu

So here’s my tip of the week: regularly make time to ask yourself who you want to be, and then assess if your choices are supporting or detracting from that aim. Not sure who you want to be? Start with who you don’t want to be, and then work from there.

Until our next talk,

Jeremy 😃
