Why do we delay things? (Thursday Thoughts: 29 February, 2024)

It’s time for another weekly round-up of tips for better mental health! Each week I share a handful of things I’ve come across that I find interesting, intriguing and inspirational, plus I tell you about anything noteworthy that’s coming up on my weekly podcast, Let’s Talk About Mental Health, or just generally in terms of my work. So… let’s talk!

Hello Talkers! 👋🗣😃

I am the worst at leaving things until the 11th hour sometimes.

Given the type of work I do, you’d think that I’d have myself well-organised and planned far in advance so I never have to rush… but you’d be wrong. I’m great with sticking to a routine with my podcast and I work two weeks ahead on that, but some administration stuff ends up on the “I’ll get to it pile” for so long that by the time I get to it I have no choice but to get to it or I’ll miss the deadline.

Case in point: I had a lovely email from my tax agent recently gently reminding me to send her all of my documentation for the year because time was running out and, yet again, I had left it until the last minute. I had been dreading doing it, and do you know what? The whole thing took less than 45 minutes. So, basically, I’ve let this thing just hang over my head for months when I could have knocked it over in less than an hour. It’s kind-of ridiculous, really.

The reason I’m sharing that story, which is one I’m actually a bit embarrassed about to be honest, is that I want to remind myself how it feels to have to admit my ridiculousness out loud to other people in the hope it will serve to remind me next time I go to avoid something that could be resolved in a short period of time. Will it work? No idea. But anything is worth trying!

So here’s my tip of the week: Actually, no tip from me this week; I’d like your tips! If you’re prone to a bit of an 11th hour approach to getting things done, what works for you to stop leaving things until the last minute? Let me know in the comments below!

Until our next talk,

Jeremy 😃

  1. Hi Jeremy, I absolutely love listening to your podcasts. You have a great sense of humour, I love the 80s music references. I suffer anxiety and life has delt me lots of challenges. When anxiety tries to take over, I can always ground myself by listening to you and taking your advice. Francine xxx
