What’s your opinion on opinions? (Thursday Thoughts: 7 March, 2024)

It’s time for another weekly round-up of tips for better mental health! Each week I share a handful of things I’ve come across that I find interesting, intriguing and inspirational, plus I tell you about anything noteworthy that’s coming up on my weekly podcast, Let’s Talk About Mental Health, or just generally in terms of my work. So… let’s talk!

Hello Talkers! 👋🗣😃

Is it just me, or does it feel like we’re constantly bombarded with a cacophony of opinions these days?

It seems like everywhere you turn there’s someone ready to share their two cents worth on every subject under the sun (you should see some of the comments I get on socials and my podcast). And don’t even get me started on the unsolicited advice that comes flying at us like unwanted subscription emails; it’s as if everyone around us suddenly fancies themselves as the editor of everybody else’s life, and being super-keen to critique (and often, unkindly so).

But here’s a thought: what if we could hit the ‘mute’ button on this unsolicited noise? Imagine a remote control with a special button just for those moments when you wish to turn down the volume on the world’s opinions about your life choices. Now, while technology hasn’t quite caught up to our whims (patience, my friends), I’ve got a little trick up my sleeve that’s just as effective: why not create your own mental ‘mute’ button?!

Whenever you find yourself overwhelmed by the chorus of unsolicited advice and unkind opinions, take a moment to visualise pressing a big, red button that silences the noise. Then, replace it with a soundtrack of your choice — perhaps the empowering words of someone you admire, the calming sounds of nature, or even a playlist of your favourite tunes. This act of mentally switching channels can help you regain control over what you consume mentally, allowing you to stay focused on your own path and wellbeing.

It’s about acknowledging that while the world may have a multitude of voices, you have the power to choose which ones you tune into. It’s not about ignoring constructive criticism or closing yourself off, but instead it’s about protecting your mental space from negativity and noise that doesn’t serve you.

So here’s my tip of the week: The next time you find yourself being swamped by too many voices with far too many opinions, try hitting your own mental mute button. After all, the most important voice in your life — the one that truly deserves to be listened to — is your own. Keep tuning into what matters, and let the rest just be background noise.

Until our next talk,

Jeremy 😃

  1. Good idea. I used to keep a little box just inside my door. If I received any unkind, unnecessary, unwanted input during the day I would mentally banish it to that box when I got home. Not bring it inside with me. I usually found whatever it was had evaporated by the next day! It didn’t immediately “switch tracks” to something nicer or more self-affirming, because I might need the input Out There on the other side of the door. But my home was sacred.

  2. Another thoughtful post. Thank you, Jeremy. Over the past months I’ve reminded myself that I don’t need to weigh in on everything, which has made life more peaceful.
